Thomas Jefferson said “The cornerstone of democracy rests on the foundation of an educated electorate.”
Amendment One is an attempt by a handful of North Carolina State Legislators to pass a Constitutional Amendment to ban any relationship which is not a Husband and Wife relationship. Their claimed target is gay marriage, however the Amendment does not target one group but would affect anyone and everyone who is not in a marital relationship. The Amendment is so poorly drafted that (according to almost every legal scholar, family lawyer, and law professor) in addition to banning gay marriage, it could affect Domestic Violence victims, dating relationships, cohabiting adults, legal contracts [including Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, Health Care Powers of Attorney] between family members and friends, in addition to probably many, many more problems.
Opponents have come out in droves in an attempt to oppose the measure and educate the electorate, but it appears that the misleading campaign by the proponents of Amendment One is working its magic; much to the detriment of all North Carolinians, young and old.
According to Public Policy Polling, North Carolina’s uneducated electorate could cause Amendment One to pass. Of those surveyed, only 40% knew what Amendment One actually did and the Amendment led by 55% to 41%. Once the voters were informed of what Amendment One actually said and did, support for Amendment One fell to 38%.
Today, a new twist to this Amendment has surfaced. State Senator Peter Brunstetter (R), who wrote and sponsored Amendment One, crafted the Amendment in order to “…protect the Caucasian Race…” Surprisingly, this was his own wife’s admission. Not surprisingly, both Peter and his wife are white.
